W. Keith and Janet Kellogg University Art Gallery at Cal Poly Pomona
2300 Silver Lake Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90039
Led by Cal Poly Pomona Professor Lauren Bricker, this workshop is designed for modern house owners, architects, as well as those interested in preservation more broadly. The day-long program will focus on two icons of Los Angeles modernism: Richard and Dion Neutra’s VDL Research House (1932-1966) and Ray Kappe’s own residence (1967). Both works figure prominently in the current exhibition Technology and Environment, and their architecture, building systems, and materials present conservation and maintenance challenges. The preservation of these houses and other modern residences will be the focus of this program with local and nationally-known experts in the field of architectural conservation speaking on a range of topics. Particular attention will be placed on issues associated with roof systems and reinforced concrete.
Speakers include Ray Kappe, FAIA; Paul Gaudette, WJE Chicago; Leo Marmol, FAIA; Veronica Martin, WJE San Francisco; Kyle Normandin, Getty Conservation Institute; and Sarah Lorenzen, Director, VDL House.
The workshop includes a box lunch and bus transportation from the VDL House to the Kappe House in the Pacific Palisades for a tour and an onsite Q&A with Ray Kappe.
Fee event: $50; register at eventbrite.com.
